Nyarai Cellars

The name Nyarai (Na-Rye) is derived from the Southern African Shona dialect meaning Humility. They craft wines sourced from prime Niagara Peninsula vineyards that speak proudly of their origin. Winemaker Steve Byfield takes a hands-off approach to winemaking, letting the character of the varietals and terroir shine through.

Like many of our producers, Nyarai is a 'virtual' winery, meaning they don't own vineyards. Rather, their focus is on carefully selecting plots of grapes from different vineyards throughout Niagara. Steve employs a number of techniques to preserve the delicate nuances of the fruit he selects including low-temperature fermentations in stainless steel, rather than oak, for his whites. In all Nyarai's bottlings, the humble reverence toward the grapes shines through above all.
